Lifting of milk quotas creates fear among Italian producers

Recently, the Italian agriculture minister Mario Catania announced the country will lift its milk production limits in 2015.  This action has sparked much outrage from local producers who feel they will not be able to compete with other countries such as France and Germany who produce more than double the amount of Italy.  However, Catania explains, “The lifting of the quotas will bring a rationalization of our system and an economy of scale.”  The Italian government hopes this move will allow farmers to become more competitive and combat market volatility.  Will this change in agriculture policy create an opportunity for North American dairy producers to export into Italy, which is one of the largest EU economies?
